DImity's March to May Marathon
This March, Cystic Fibrosis South Australia is challenging you to take the fight to lung disease by running the distance of a marathon at your own pace. To help you along this journey, you’re encouraged to set a fundraising goal and ask your family, friends and colleagues to support your activity.
Lung Disease is an unwelcome enemy the majority of people living with Cystic Fibrosis will have to face during their lives. In conjunction with medical treatment, taking part in regular exercise that increases breathing and heart rate, like running, has been shown to have amazing effects on people living with Cystic Fibrosis.
Unlike traditional marathons, you don’t need to have superhuman fitness to enter the MarchtoMay challenge, you just need to be able to run just under 500m a day. Using the free fitness devices like Strava or Mapmyfitness, you can keep track, publish and share the distance you’ve covered on your personalised fundraising page in real-time.
History of the MarchtoMay Marathon
MarchtoMay was inspired by Dimity Bullen-Nicholas’ journey from self-proclaimed couch-potato to a regular marathon competitor. Dimity was like many Cystic Fibrosis sufferers, inactive, constantly tired and lacking energy, until she heard about the benefits regular physical activity could have on her condition.
Starting off, Dimity was limited by exhaustion and fatigue, only able to jog a few minutes session. But as time went on, Dimity gradually felt more and more energised with each run, and noticed the improvements spilling over to her daily life. Spurred by these effects, Dimity has changed her life by committing to regular exercise. Along with this new energy, Dimity credits regular exercise for her increased lung function, immunity, and improved recovery time.
It’s because of these changes which are allowing her to live her life the way she wants, that MarchtoMay was created. Dimity hopes that this campaign allows other others living with Cystic Fibrosis to experience the same benefits that she has.
